on Lake Laberge

An evening paddle on Lake Laberge     Come enjoy this beautiful, pristine wilderness lake with us - a lake made famous by the poetry of Robert W. Service during the Klondike Gold Rush.

Part of the Yukon River system, Laberge is 50 km miles long and surrounded by snow-capped mountains (click here for an aerial photo). Canoeing and camping, we'll explore endless beaches and the many beautiful bays and islands as we circumnavigate our lake. We'll camp on beaches with spectacular vistas, cook our meals over a campfire and paddle in the mellow light of the sunset.

At the north end lies Lower Laberge, with its gold rush era cabins and the wreck of the sternwheeler Casca. We'll stop here to explore and hike around this fascinating 1898 settlement.

A remote sandy beach on Lake Laberge     The lake is a photographer's dream! Wildlife commonly seen include moose, caribou, wolves and loons. Bald eagles are seldom out of sight for long.

Fishing is excellent, for Lake trout, Northern pike and Arctic grayling. They each have their favourite habitat - Lake trout in cold water, Northern pike in warm bays and Arctic grayling at the creek mouths and in the Thirty Mile River.

We'll also explore the upper part of the Thirty Mile River from the point where it empties the lake at the north end. Described by National Geographic as "30 miles of magic," it is crystal clear and a beautiful emerald green colour. We'll paddle the river, letting the current carry us along at an easy pace. We'll camp for one night in a sheltered cove and catch some grayling to cook over an open fire.

Canoeing on the Thirty Mile River     Putting the canoes on the roof racks of the support boat, we'll power back up to lake and head along the east shore. The day will be full of hiking, taking pictures from incredible promontories, and just relaxing and enjoying the peaceful camaraderie of our wilderness journey.

On the final day, we'll load the canoes back onto the support boat and take the short 10 km run back to our home dock - rested and with our souls refreshed.
