Premier Fly Fishing Trip
for Arctic Grayling

We believe this is the finest Arctic grayling
fly fishing trip in the Yukon!
Perhaps this journey is best described not as a fishing trip but as a fishing adventure!
We fish along the beautiful and historic Thirty Mile section of the Yukon River, which lies at
the north end of Lake Laberge
(map).
It is fast flowing and crystal clear, allowing you to easily see your fish rising to the fly
from depths of 5-6 feet!
Here you can drift fish, casting from our boat, or unload one of the canoes that we
always carry on top and float the river in absolute peace and quiet. There are also many
beautiful small islands and gravel bars where we can land, wade out a short ways and cast into the
river as it flows by. We'll cook our catch over an open fire on one special island selected for
its incredible view - and of course for its great fishing!
Our journey to the Thirty Mile will take us north along Lake Laberge. Nestled
between 2 mountain ranges, this is one of the most scenic lakes in the Yukon. Along the way
there are beautiful long beaches varying from gray to red in colour, with some almost ivory.
In places the cliffs drop almost straight into the water.
Here bald eagles are common, along
with a variety of hawks and other raptors including the rare Peregrine Falcon. Frequently,
we'll see a bear or moose ambling along the beach. Sometimes we come across caribou swimming the
lake - you'll be surprised at how fast they can swim!
Once at the north end of the lake (about a 1-hour trip), we will enter the
Thirty Mile, passing the abandoned gold rush village of Lower Laberge. Here on the beach lies
the wreck of the paddlewheeler Casca. Along the bank are several old cabins, including
the old telegraph station. A few minutes to explore and take pictures here is time well spent.
Now on the Thirty Mile - the fishing part of our adventure is about to begin!
This is probably not the fishing you're used to - this is pristine wilderness
fishing with no other boats around. The simple equation that goes with that fact is:
low fishing pressure = great fishing!
As we fish we'll be drifting by eagles perched in trees overhanging the river.
This is a good area to see wolves, as well as bear, moose and caribou. We have also spotted
wolverines on several of our trips recently.
Later in the year, starting in August, we will see
spectacular displays of the Northern Lights from our riverside campsite!
On multi-day trips we
will have time for a number of interesting hikes. We will explore the paddlewheeler Norcom,
seen in the photo to the right. She was pulled up on Shipyard Island almost 90 years ago, and
amazingly, we can still walk her decks today!
Another hike goes up a creek to an incredible view of the river and mountains - bring lots of
film! This creek was mined many years ago, and we can try some gold panning here - you'll be
thrilled to see gold in your pan!!
