Spirit of the North fly fishing adventures are designed to meet the needs of each
individual angler. Packages range from 2-7 days and are priced on a per-person, per-day basis. You can camp
along the way at lakeside campsites chosen for their great views and fishing, or choose deluxe
accommodations at our beautiful lakeside vacation home.
Upon advising us of the length of your proposed adventure, the experience you are seeking and the
species of fish you wish to target, we will consult with you to provide a custom-tailored fishing
package complete with price and itinerary.
The majority of our fly fishing trips depart from our home base - here on "the marge of Lake Laberge," as Klondike poet Robert W. Service called it.
Thirty miles long and over five miles across, the crystal clear waters of Laberge are home to trophy size Lake trout, Northern pike and inconnu. At its north end,
the lake is drained by the famous 30 Mile section of the Yukon River, a pristine, fast-flowing fly fisherman's dream. Here you can watch Arctic grayling rise to your
fly from depths of 6-8 feet. This is widely considered to be the finest Arctic grayling fishing in the North.
Grayling generally aren't fussy eaters, and will take most fly patterns that are brown, or brown and black, wet or dry. Some of my favourites are
the elk wing caddis, light Cahill, mosquito patterns and the #1 early-season fly, the black gnat. One technique that will hook lots of grayling is simply letting your fly
drag at the end of your drift - a few twitches help, too!
Lake trout are a little harder to reach with flies. Trout are quite shallow here in early summer and fall. However, early morning will find them up in as
little as 4 feet of water, so casting from shore any time of year will work well for you early risers. You will want a sinking tip line with about a 15-foot leader and strike
indicator. Lake Laberge has a large number of shallow reefs and creek mouths that are very productive for trophy trout. My all-time favourite fly is the wooly bugger with
some extra flashaboo attached.
Northern pike are, of course, much shallower and easier to reach. Most of our pike fishing is done in 4-8 feet of water - no sinking lines here! The
water is crystal clear, so sight-casting for these incredible predators is about as exciting as it gets for a fly fisherman.
A #8-9 wt. rod is recommended. Be prepared for a long battle - we have caught pike in excess of 48 pounds here (wire leaders, please)!
My favourite flies are black, red and white, and chartreuse streamers.
The area we fish is huge, so you will never run out of new places to fish. Even a 7-day trip barely scratches the surface of the possible adventures.
