Northern Adventures:
7-Day Teslin River Trip
by Boat & Canoe
Click on each photo to greatly enlarge it
The Teslin, a tributary of the Yukon River, is noted for the beauty of
the scenery as it winds through several mountain ranges
(click here to see a map of the area).
In many places, it splits into numerous channels - the gravel bars on the resulting islands provide particularly good wildlife
viewing. Moose, caribou, bears and wolves are often seen, and the river is also home to a large
population of bald eagles due to the number of Arctic grayling and Northern pike in the river.
Large numbers of salmon also spawn here in August and September.
This is a true wilderness river with many smaller rivers running into it,
adding to the variety of both scenery and wildlife. Despite it's beauty, though, few people
travel the Teslin. Click here to see a photo album by one of our guests.
We'll explore a number of Gold Rush camps such as Mason's Landing and Million
Dollar Bar, where we'll pan for gold and see where the name came from!
As well as canoeing the Teslin River, we'll be on the legendary Yukon River
from Hootalinqua to Carmacks. At Carmacks, we'll pull out and travel comfortable back to
Whitehorse in a van. If you would like to go all the way to Dawson City,
have a look at our 7-Day Yukon River Adventure.
Itinerary:
Day 1:
We will pick you up at your hotel in Whitehorse and depart approximately 11:00 a.m. for the village of Johnson's
Crossing (a 1½-hour drive).
First there will be visit to the well-known lodge to stock up on fresh baked
goods and eat a hearty lunch (explorers should never travel on an empty stomach!).
Launching our canoes into the Teslin River, we'll paddle to a beautiful campsite with a
magnificent view of the wilderness. You'll fall asleep to the sounds of the river softly flowing
by. Our schedule allows for lots of time to relax, explore, fish and photograph this beautiful
region. You'll quickly discover that there's nothing like sitting around a campfire enjoying a
great meal with friends to melt away the stresses of life!
Days 3-5:
Our paddling adventure will take us past Million Dollar Bar, where we'll stop
to survey the long-forgotten mining equipment and pan for gold. You will still find "colours" in
every pan here!
We'll land at the nice sandy beach at Mason's Landing and explore that
historic community, and to get a different look at the country, we'll also hike up the Boswell
River for some great photographs.
Days 6-7:
We'll camp at the ghost town of Hootalinqua, located where the Teslin empties
into the Yukon River. There will be ample time to explore the
pioneer buildings, and then drift downstream a short way to Shipyard Island, the final resting
place of the sternwheeler Norcom. She was pulled up onto the ways here and abandoned in
1918, but is in remarkably good condition still. We'll go on board and you'll become one of
the very select group of people who have walked the decks of a real paddlewheeler from the
Klondike Gold Rush of 1898!
Our journey ends at the village of Carmacks, where the North Klondike Highway
to Dawson City crosses the Yukon River. We'll load up our boats and gear and make our way back
to Whitehorse, a pleasant 2-hour drive. Or, you can continue your canoe trip with us to Dawson City!
